  • How do I pick up my Hudson Valley CSA Share?
When you arrive at your pick-up location, check in with the farm crew member or site volunteer. You are welcome to send a friend to pick up for you, they can give your name at pickup, no need to notify us in advance. On the farm, in Red Hook Village, and at the Maritime Museum in Kingston, CSA pick-ups are "farm stand style." The week's share contents will be set out in bulk crates, and a list of how much of each item you may take will be provided. Please bring your own bags/boxes to carry your share home. In Woodstock, shares will be pre-assembled and set out in crates. Please bring your own bags/boxes to carry your share home, you will not be able to take the farm's crates with you. In Rhinebeck and at Village Grocery in Kingston, shares will be pre-packaged into cardboard boxes, ready for members to take home. Eggs are picked up separately, they will not be in the vegetable crates/boxes.
  • Where and when do I pick up my share?
We offer six pick-up locations in the Hudson Valley. When you signed up, you chose your “default” location and pick-up day. To see a full season calendar, with A Weeks, B Weeks, and Holiday Weeks specified, visit our 2024 CSA Schedule page.
  • How do I switch my pick-up site for the week?
If you prefer to pick up your share at one of our other locations on a given week, you can schedule that from your GrownBy Membership Dashboard. Schedule changes must be made at least 3 days before the earlier of the two pickup dates (i.e. if you are switching from Wednesday to Saturday pickups, OR if you are switching from Saturday to Wednesday pickups, in either case make the change by Sunday night at 11:59pm). To schedule a week’s pickup for a different location, sign into your member account and go to https://grownby.app/orders. You will see a list of all of your upcoming pick-up dates. Scroll to the date you would like to change and click on the "Reschedule" button. Select the day/location you want to switch to in the dropdown menu. Please note if you have an egg share in addition to your vegetable share, you will need to input this change for your egg share as well as your vegetable share. Click "Save New Pickups" and your share(s) for that week will be delivered to the location you selected.
  • How do I put a vacation hold on my share?
You have the option to schedule up to two "vacation weeks" during the season. When you claim a vacation week, your pick-up for that week will be cancelled and you will receive a credit in your GrownBy account for the value of your skipped share (veggies and/or eggs), which will be automatically applied to your next CSA installment payment or CSA purchase. You must process your vacation week claim at least 3 days before your scheduled pick-up so that we can adjust the week's harvest plan (i.e. if you pick up Wednesday, make the change by Sunday at 11:59pm). You have the option to claim up to 2 vacation weeks over the course of this season. To claim a vacation week, sign into your GrownBy member account and go to the Orders section at https://grownby.app/orders. You will see a list of all of your upcoming pick-up dates. Scroll to the date you would like to put on hold and click on the "Claim Vacation Week" button. If you have an egg share in addition to your vegetable share, you will need to check the boxes next to both items. Click "Confirm Vacation" and your share will be put on hold for that date, and a credit for the value of your share(s) will be added to your account. (You can also see a how-to video with step-by-step instructions here.)
  • What if I forget to pick up my share?
For members who pick up on the Farm, or in Red Hook, in Kingston at the Maritime Museum, or Rhinebeck: If you miss a pick-up and did not schedule a vacation hold for that week, we will hold your share at our Farm Market through the weekend. You can stop by and pick up your share any time during the Market's regular open hours before the end of the day on Monday. Shares that are not claimed by the time the Market closes on Monday will be donated to Long Table Harvest. The Farm Market's hours are Monday–Saturday 10am–6pm Sundays 10am–4pm Woodstock members: Late pick-up is not available for members who pick up in Woodstock, because we do not have someone on the farm staff there at the end of pick-up to bring your share back to the farm. Unclaimed shares in Woodstock will be donated to Family of Woodstock’s food pantry at the end of the regular pick-up window. Kingston Village Grocery members: Members who pick up at Village Grocery have a two-day window in which to pick up your shares: Fridays from 5–7pm or Saturdays during Village Grocery's open hours (8am–7pm). Pick-up after the end of day on Saturday is not available.
  • If I have a biweekly share, can I switch to the other schedule?
Biweekly members can choose to sign up for either the “A Week” or “B Week” schedule, and your schedule is then set for the season. We cannot accommodate switching back and forth between A and B Week schedules during the season.
  • Can I split a share with a friend?
Yes, no problem! Either one of you can pick your share on any given week. Just give the name of the primary account holder (usually the person who initially signed up for the share) when you check in. If you both want to receive our email newsletters (which tell you what will be in your share each week, plus news from the farm, recipe ideas, etc.), you can add a secondary email address to your GrownBy account. Log into the GrownBy account used to purchase your share, go to https://grownby.app/profile, and go to "Personal Information." Add your friend's email address to the "Email 2" field. Both email accounts will be added to our email list.
  • Can I visit the farm's Pick-your-own Garden as part of my share?
Yes! All Hearty Roots CSA members are invited to pick in the garden during open hours. Biweekly or Custom Schedule Share members are invited to visit during the weeks that they are scheduled to pick up their share. You can find all of the details about visiting the garden on our Pick-your-own FAQ page: https://www.heartyroots.com/pick-your-own-garden-faqs
  • Do you have any advice on how to store my produce and keep it fresh?
Our vegetables are very fresh when you receive them, but it definitely takes some care on your end to keep them that way once they make it to your kitchen. Taking a few moments to put away vegetables properly can be the difference between a limp head of lettuce and one that is still fresh and crisp a week after pickup. Leafy greens should be stored in a way that keeps them from wilting, such as in a plastic produce bag, Tupperware container, or the high-humidity produce drawer in the fridge. They should go into the fridge promptly. Root crops such as beets, carrots, turnips and radishes also need high humidity and cold temperatures to stay crunchy and crisp. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are more forgiving and can be stored in a cool, dark place, not necessarily in the fridge. Winter squash actually store better at room temperature than anywhere else. For more information about specific vegetables, these Veggie Info Sheets are an excellent resource. And we include more tips and suggestions in your weekly share list email!
  • What if I need to cancel my share?
If you paid in full, you can cancel your share at any time with a week's notice. You can choose to have a credit issued for a future CSA or Farm Market purchase; or receive a refund for the value of the shares remaining in the season less processing fees. If you pay with installments, you can cancel your payment plan at any time. The installment payments already made are non-refundable, and your cancellation will take effect at the beginning of the next month. To cancel your share, or if you have any questions about this cancellation policy, please email us at csa@heartyroots.com.
  • What if I have other questions that aren't answered here?
Take a look at our main Hudson Valley CSA page to see if the information you need is there: https://www.heartyroots.com/hudson-valley-csa. If not, email us! Reach out to Varick Shute, our CSA membership manager, at csa@heartyroots.com.
  • What are the Pick-your-own Garden hours?
The pick-your-own garden will be open starting the first week of June 2024! The garden is open only to current CSA members (members that pick up at any location are welcome to come visit). CSA members are welcome to pick in the garden during the harvest season on Wednesdays 2 – 7pm, or Saturdays during daylight hours. Biweekly and Custom Schedule Share members are invited to visit during the weeks that they are scheduled to pick up their share only. For the first couple of weeks of the season, only a limited number of plants are ready for picking, including herbs and some types of flowers.
  • Can all members pick from the Pick-your-own Garden?
Yes! All Hearty Roots CSA members are invited to pick in the garden during open hours. Biweekly or Custom Schedule Share members are invited to visit during the weeks that they are scheduled to pick up their share.
  • What will I find in the Pick-your-own Garden?
The garden includes herbs, flowers, and seasonal items like cherry tomatoes, snap peas and hot peppers.
  • Are there any rules when visiting the farm?
Thanks for asking! We do have several important rules to keep everyone safe at the farm. Health + Food Safety Rules Members who are sick may not enter the garden. Please wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before visiting the garden. Only touch food that you are picking, do not touch any food that will be left in the garden (for example, do not touch a cherry tomato that you aren't going to pick). General Safety Rules No pets at the farm. Monitor children at the farm, and always be on the lookout for common farm hazards like uneven ground, tractors and equipment, sharp objects, etc. Vehicles should stay in the parking lot only (don’t drive on farm roads).
  • Can I bring my dog to the Pick-your-own Garden?
No, please do not bring any animals to the pick-your-own garden. We love dogs, but food safety rules are quite strict regarding domestic animals and edible crops. Dogs are permitted in the area to the South of the barn. Dogs must be on a leash at all times and you must pick up after your animal. If there are any issues of aggression with your animal, we do reserve the right to ask you to take your animal home.
  • Can I pick as much as I want?
We rely on members to use your judgement and take modest quantities to ensure that there will be enough to go around for all CSA members. Please do not take more than your fair share, and only pick what your household can use in a week.
  • Can I help in the pick-your-own garden?
YES! As you are picking, we love when members take a minute to pull out weeds around the plants. This is incredibly helpful as we work to maintain this space throughout the year.
  • Do I pay extra for pick-your-own items?
Items from the garden are included in the price of your share.
  • Why do you have a Pick-your-own Garden?
The items in the garden are usually time-intensive to harvest, so we would not be able to put them in the regular share; but we want members to have the option to bring them home if they wish to take the time to pick. We also enjoy having members visit the farm, so we see the PYO garden as an incentive for members to come out to the farm in person!
  • How do I log into my member account?
We use GrownBy software as our CSA member management system. You established an account when you first signed up, and you can log in at this link. If you have forgotten your password, you can request it automatically; if you are still having trouble please get in touch with us at csa@heartyroots.com.
